Japanese Folk Tales

Stretching back to ancient times, Japanese folk tales and lore are also plentiful. Many of the tales are feature very unique and personality rich animals like the Tanuki, or Oni, the Japanese version of a demon.

Of course these tales are a big part of Japanese traditional theater and literature, but they also play a big part in modern day movies, animation, and even video games.

I'm putting together a collection of Japanese folktales and lore from old books as well as stories I hear living in Japan so check out the links below and enjoy!

Table of Contents:

  • The Book of Tea
    By Kakuzo Okakura
(Not really a folk tale but interesting nonetheless)

  • Japanese Fairy Tales: Second Series
    Teresa Peirce Williston [1911]

  • Japanese Fairy Tales
    Compiled by Yei Theodora Ozaki

  • The Golden Hairpin
    by Richard Gordon Smith

  • The Story of Gio
    Retold by Ridgely Torrence

  • Ghost Story of the Flute's Tomb
    by Richard Gordon Smith

  • Check back weekly for more! I also recommend the Sacred-Texts Shinto Archive for more really great material.
