Mother's Day in Japan
Mother's Day in Japan, also known as it's Japanese translation "Haha No Hi", is celebrated throughout Japan on the second Sunday of May. It carries the same meaning as its western counterpart, and is basically a way of saying "Thank you" to the mothers. Although it was celebrated as early as 1913 by small groups, it didn't become widespread until after WWII. Today, it's a very popular holiday for Japanese people and for Japanese media and stores, who give it quite a bit of attention.
Common gifts for Mother's Day in Japan include red carnations, red chocolate, and sometimes a card. Of course, there are a huge selection of things ranging from to Mother's Day food to Mother's Day handkerchiefs to get for mom from the department stores, who turn their stores red and pink for the holidays.
